These are ballpark figures. I quote properly after a quick video survey or phone call. It takes about 10 to 20 minutes and it is free. Storage is billed in 4-week blocks. If you vacate early, refunds are calculated per full week remaining.

If you want to visit your things regularly, self-storage is the better fit. If you want them stored safely and brought back when you are ready, container storage is simpler and usually cheaper once you add up van hire, fuel, and your own time. Either way, your first week is FREE when you book a removal with me.

Self-storage with us comes in two levels:

  • Hands-off (we manage it): I arrange the room, move your items in, and hold the keys. You tell me when you want things collected or delivered. If you need to inspect items, I send a mover to accompany you. That is £24 (inc VAT) per hour with a 2-hour minimum, and 8 days notice.
  • Hands-on (you keep the keys): We transport and load your items into the room, then hand you the keys. You visit whenever Big Yellow is open. No notice, no mover needed. The branch I use most often for East London customers is on Clover Street in the City, handier for E1 and E2 postcodes, though availability and room sizes vary.

What fits in a 250 cubic foot container

Each container is 250 cubic feet, roughly 7 cubic metres. Think of it as the size of a large garden shed. One container typically holds:

  • A double bed, dismantled, with the mattress
  • A three-seater sofa
  • A chest of drawers and a bedside table
  • 10 to 15 standard moving boxes
  • A few lamps, small tables, and odd bits

For box-only storage, one container holds about 30 to 40 standard tea-chest boxes. If you are packing yourself, use double-wall boxes. Single-wall ones buckle under the weight in storage. Parking and access in East London

This is where local knowledge matters. East London is a mix of Victorian terraces with permit-only streets, warehouse conversions with shared loading bays, and new-build towers run by building management. Collecting from an E postcode usually means planning the parking before the crew turns up, because most of these streets are controlled.

I cover every E postcode across Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Waltham Forest, and Newham. From my base in Walthamstow I am at most East London doors within 20 to 40 minutes depending on traffic and which side of the borough you are on.

What I know about collecting from these streets:

  • The terraced roads around Bethnal Green, Bow, and Mile End (E1, E2, E3) are mostly permit-only. You will usually need a parking suspension or temporary loading bay from Tower Hamlets Council. The resident applies and pays, and I tell you who to contact and what to ask for. The best place to check is the council website. Search for “parking suspension” and you will find the application and fees.
  • The new-build towers around Canary Wharf, Isle of Dogs, and Stratford (E14, E15) usually have dedicated service bays booked through building management, not the council. Some need 48 hours notice. I confirm all of that before moving day.
  • The warehouse conversions in Shoreditch, Hackney Wick, and Bethnal Green often have wide openings but upper-floor access without a lift. I plan the crew and the route before we start loading.
  • The A11 (Mile End Road, Bow Road), A13 (Commercial Road), and A1206 (Aspen Way) are Red Routes managed by TfL. No stopping or loading on red lines without a permit. Check TfL’s Red Route rules if your move touches one of these roads.
  • I bring floor coverings and blankets for every collection. Hallways, stairs, and landings are all protected.

How do I get my things back?+
For container storage, give me 7 days notice and tell me where and when you want delivery. I redeliver to your new home, your old address, or a different address entirely. For self-storage where I hold the keys, 8 days notice for delivery. Redelivery is the most common scenario: people store between moves, then send everything to the new place.
Is my stuff insured while it is in storage?+
Yes. Container storage includes insurance in the weekly price. For self-storage rooms, insurance is calculated by Big Yellow based on declared value. It is also worth checking whether your home contents policy covers items in storage. Many do, and it can save you money.
What is the minimum storage period?+
There is no minimum term for container storage. You are not locked into anything. Storage is billed in 4-week blocks and refunded per full week if you vacate early. First week is FREE with any removal, no minimum spend.
What should not go in storage?+
No perishable food, live plants, animals, flammable materials such as paint, petrol, chemicals or gas bottles, illegal items, cash, or jewellery. Keep irreplaceable valuables and important documents with you rather than in storage. If you are unsure about something specific, ask me before packing it.
Can you store my things while I am moving house?+
That is the most common reason people call me. You sell your place, the chain delays, and you need somewhere safe for your belongings for a week or three months. I handle the removal and the storage in one job, so you are not coordinating two companies. When the new place is ready, I deliver everything there.
Where is your storage facility?+
My container storage facility is in Rainham, RM13, in Essex. It is a secure site and each container is sealed with a unique tag. Self-storage rooms are arranged through Big Yellow, with the branch chosen based on room availability and which E postcode is handiest for you.
Do I need a parking permit for collection?+
