A packing service is not about boxes. It is about waking up on moving day knowing that someone else already did the most difficult part
Packing is the job everyone underestimates. You look around your flat and think: a few boxes, a couple of rolls of tape, one weekend. Then you start. The kitchen alone takes two days. The fragiles need wrapping. The wardrobe is bigger than you remembered. The books are heavier than you thought. And somewhere around box 40, you realise you still have three rooms to go. A packing service exists for exactly this moment.
Most people in London do not have a spare weekend. They are working full-time, managing children, sorting solicitors, and trying to coordinate completion dates. Packing eats the time they do not have. That is where a packing service in London makes the difference.
London House Removals offers professional packing as a standalone service or alongside your removal. Full packing (we pack everything) or partial packing (just the kitchen, just the artwork, just the things you do not trust yourself with). You choose what you need. We bring the materials, the people, and the experience.
Every packing job starts with a survey. Phone call for small flats. Video for most homes. In-person for large or complex properties. We look at what you have, how much of it there is, and what needs specialist handling. Then we quote. The price we quote is the price you pay, no hidden fees or surprises.

How packing pricing works
Packing prices vary more than removal prices. Two identical 3-bedroom houses can have completely different packing costs because of what is inside them. A minimalist flat with barely any fragile items costs a fraction of what a family home with china, artwork, and three children’s bedrooms costs.
The only honest way to price packing is to look at what you have first. That is why we survey before we quote. But to give you a sense of what professional packing costs in London, here are the typical ranges.
| Property size | London average (2026, inc VAT) | London House Removals (inc VAT) |
|---|
| 1-bedroom flat | £200 to £350 | From £180 to £350 (confirmed after survey) |
| 2-bed flat or house | £330 to £550 | From £300 to 525 (confirmed after survey) |
| 3-bedroom house | £450 to £750 | From £475 to £730 (confirmed after survey) |
| 4-bedroom house | £600 to £950 | From £650 to £940 (confirmed after survey) |
| 5+ bedroom house | £950 to £1,400+ | From £900 to £1450+ (confirmed after survey) |
All prices include VAT, and labour. London average ranges sourced from verified 2026 removal industry data (Compare My Move and HomeOwners Alliance). Your actual price depends on the volume and type of belongings. Confirmed after survey.
Why packing prices vary so much
A removal is relatively predictable. A 3-bed house usually needs a certain size van, a certain size crew, and a certain number of hours. Packing is different because the same property size can contain wildly different amounts of stuff.
- Volume of belongings. A cluttered 2-bed flat can take longer to pack than a minimalist 4-bed house. More items means more materials, more time, more people.
- Fragile items. Artwork, antiques, china, and glassware need specialist materials and extra time. Each piece is individually wrapped. A home with a large art collection and wedding china costs more to pack than one without.
- Service level. Full packing (everything), partial packing (specific rooms), or fragile-only. You choose what you need. The price reflects what we actually do.
- Access. Stairs without a lift, narrow corridors, or restricted parking add time. We assess this during the survey.
- Timing. Midweek packing is easier to schedule. End-of-month and August dates book up fast.
This is why we survey before quoting. The number you see on the quote is based on what we actually saw in your home, not a guess based on how many bedrooms you told us you have.

How it works
Step 1. Survey
We look at what you have and what needs packing. Phone survey for small flats. Free video survey (about 20 minutes) for most homes. In-person for larger or more complex properties. We note fragile items, artwork, antiques, and anything that needs specialist handling.
Step 2. Quote
You receive a written quote within 12 to 36 hours. The quote lists exactly what we pack, the materials included, the team size, and the estimated time. If you are also booking a removal, the packing and removal quotes come together in place. No surprises on the day.
Step 3. Packing day
Our team arrives with all materials: double-walled boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, wardrobe cartons, mattress covers, tape. Every room is packed systematically. Boxes are labelled by room and contents. Fragile items are individually wrapped. Wardrobes are transferred to cartons so your clothes stay hanging. Most full-house packing is completed in one day. Larger properties may take two.
Step 4. Moving day
Everything is already boxed, labelled, and ready to load. The removal crew arrives to a prepared home. No last-minute scrambling, no bin bags full of clothes, no fragile items loose in the back of a van. Loading is faster, which means the whole move is faster.
Step 5. Unpacking (optional)
We can unpack at the other end too. Boxes are placed in the correct rooms, unpacked, and the packing materials are taken away. You come home to a house that is livable, not a maze of cardboard. Unpacking is quoted separately and can be added at any time.
What we pack and what is included
Every packing job, full or partial, includes these as standard:
- All materials. Double-walled boxes in multiple sizes, bubble wrap, packing paper, brown PVC tape, wardrobe cartons, mattress covers, sofa covers. We bring enough for the job.
- Furniture protection. Every piece of furniture is blanket-wrapped on the vans. Sofas and mattresses are covered before they leave the room.
- Fragile specialist wrapping. Glassware and kitchenware wrapped individually in packing paper or bubble wrap, then boxed. Artwork and mirrors wrapped in bubble wrap, then cardboard-cornered and flat-packed.
- Wardrobe cartons. Your hanging clothes are transferred from wardrobe to carton without folding. They arrive at the new home ready to hang back up.
- Labelling. Every box is labelled with the destination room and a brief contents description. You know where everything is without opening every box.
- Basic dismantling. Beds, wardrobes, and tables are dismantled if needed for packing and transport.
What we can pack
Furniture, appliances, kitchenware, glassware, china, artwork, mirrors, electronics, books, clothes, shoes, bedding, linens, bathroom items, garden equipment, gym equipment, tools, children’s toys, nursery items, musical instruments, wine collections, antiques, and everything else in a typical London home.
We also handle specialist items: pianos, large artwork, bespoke furniture, delicate lighting. If you have something unusual, mention it during the survey. We will tell you exactly how we handle it.
What we cannot pack
Regulatory restrictions (we never transport or pack these):
- Hazardous materials: cans of paint, gas bottles, petrol, flammable chemicals, cleaning solvents
- Firearms and ammunition
- Live animals
- Perishable food (for moves involving storage)
Items you should keep with you:
- Cash, jewellery, watches
- Important documents: passports, birth certificates, property deeds, wills, medical records
- Medication you need daily
- Laptop, phone, and chargers
Items that need special arrangement:
- Large or complex furniture with integrated lighting, bespoke shelving, or specialist fittings. These are flagged during the survey and factored into the quote separately if they need additional time or a specialist approach.
- Live plants. We can move them house to house, but cannot pack them for storage.
If you are unsure about something, ask during the survey. We will tell you.

Self-packing with our materials
We deliver, you pack at your own pace
If you want to pack yourself but do not want the hassle of sourcing materials, we deliver the exact boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, wardrobe cartons, and tape you need straight to your door. Tell us what you are packing (or let us do a quick phone survey) and we calculate the right quantities. No over-ordering, no running out halfway through.
Best for: Anyone who wants to save on labour but still use professional-grade materials.
DIY packing
Cheapest upfront, highest hidden cost
You source the materials, dedicate evenings and weekends, and do all the wrapping yourself. Works if you have time, energy, and not too many fragile items. The risk: underestimating the time and materials needed. Most people run out of boxes halfway through and end up packing the last rooms in bin bags.
Best for: Small flats with minimal breakables and plenty of free time.
National chains
Recognised names, premium pricing
Large removal companies with nationwide networks. Trained packing teams, good for complex relocations. You pay a premium for the brand and infrastructure. Multiple people handle your move: sales, surveyor, packing crew, removal crew. For a standard London move, you may be paying for capacity you do not need.
Best for: Corporate relocations, national moves, multi-stop jobs.
Aggregator platforms
Marketplace bidding, variable quality
You post your job online, independent operators bid, the lowest price wins. You do not know who is turning up or what their packing experience is. Some are excellent. Some are not. If something gets damaged, the platform typically redirects you to the individual operator, not the brand you booked through.
Best for: Budget-focused moves where speed matters more than guarantees.
Who uses a packing service
Full house move. You are moving next week. Work is busy. Children need attention. The thought of spending every evening wrapping glasses is unbearable. We pack everything. You focus on the life stuff: solicitors, schools, redirecting post.
Fragile items only. You are happy to pack your own clothes, books, and kitchen pans. But the wedding china, the artwork, the mirror that belonged to your grandmother. Those items stay with us. We wrap them properly, box them properly, and label them clearly.
Downsizing or splitting a move. Some items go to the new home. Some go to storage. Some go to family members. We pack for both destinations in one visit. Storage items are packed to survive two moves, not one. See our packing for storage guide for how this works.
Time-poor professionals. You work long hours in the city. Evenings and weekends are spoken for. Packing is not something you can fit in. Our team arrives, packs everything in a day, and you come home to a home that is ready to move.
Landlord or estate agent clear-outs. End-of-tenancy packing. Tenant has left, contents need packing for disposal, storage, or forwarding. Fast, thorough, and documented.
Areas we cover
We pack and move across all London postcodes from our base in Walthamstow E17. North London, East London, South London, West London, and Central London. If you need a parking suspension or bay reservation for the removal van, we are happy to assist you in the process.
For a full list of areas and postcode-specific details, see our house removals page.
Frequently asked questions
How much do removals charge for packing?+
Professional packing in London typically ranges from about £200 for a 1-bedroom flat to £950 or more for a 4-bedroom house, depending on how much you have and how much of it is fragile. See our pricing table above for the full breakdown by property size.
Do removal companies pack for you?+
Yes. Most professional removal companies in London offer packing as a standalone service or bundled with the removal. We offer three levels: full packing (everything in your home), partial packing (specific rooms or item types), and fragile-only (glassware, artwork, antiques). You choose what you need help with and handle the rest yourself.
How expensive are packers?+
Less than most people expect when you factor in the cost of materials and the value of your time. Buying quality boxes, bubble wrap, tape, wardrobe cartons, and packing paper for a 3-bed house costs £150 to £300 in materials alone. Professional packing adds labour on top, but you get experienced packers, proper techniques, and insurance coverage from the moment we start.
What is the hardest room to pack when moving?+
The kitchen. It has the most breakables (glasses, plates, bowls, mugs), the most awkward shapes (pots, pans, baking trays), small items that need sorting (spices, cutlery, utensils), and appliances that need careful wrapping. A kitchen alone can take a full day for an inexperienced packer. Our team typically handles a standard kitchen in 2 to 4 hours. For a full breakdown by room, read our
room-by-room packing guide.
How long does packing take?+
For a professional team: a 1-bedroom flat takes 2 to 4 hours. A 2-bedroom flat or house takes 4 to 6 hours. A 3-bedroom house takes 6 to 8 hours. A 4 to 5-bedroom house takes 1 to 2 days. These are averages. The actual time depends on the volume of belongings and how much is fragile. We confirm the exact timeline after survey.
What will professional packers not pack?+
Hazardous materials (paint, gas bottles, flammable chemicals), firearms and ammunition, live animals, and perishable food for storage. Cash, jewellery, passports, and important documents should stay with you, not in a box on a van. If you have something unusual, ask during the survey and we will tell you whether we can handle it.
Can you unpack at the other end?+
Yes. Unpacking is an optional add-on. Our team places boxes in the correct rooms, unpacks them, and removes all packing materials. You walk into a home that is livable, not a labyrinth of cardboard. Unpacking is quoted separately during the survey and can be added at any time before moving day.
Do you supply boxes and materials if I want to pack myself?+
Yes. We offer a materials delivery service across London. Standard boxes, wardrobe cartons, mattress covers, sofa covers, bubble wrap, packing paper, and tape. Delivered to your door. You pack everything yourself at your own pace. Call us on 0207 118 7778 for a materials quote, or read our
room-by-room packing guide for advice on what you need and how to pack it.
Do I need to be there on packing day?+
You do not have to be, but it helps. If you cannot be there, leave clear instructions about what stays and what goes, and which items need specialist care. Some clients prefer to be present for the kitchen and fragile packing, then leave the team to handle bedrooms and living areas. The team will call you with any questions.
Is a packing service worth the money?+
If you value your evenings and weekends, yes. Materials for a 3-bed house cost £150 to £300 alone. Add the time it takes an inexperienced packer (typically 3 to 5 full days for a 3-bed), and the cost of replacing anything broken during a DIY pack, and professional packing starts to look like the sensible option. You also get insurance coverage from the moment we start packing. Across 10,000+ moves, we have had exactly 3 insurance claims. A 0.03% incident rate is not luck. It is training, technique, and the right materials.
How far in advance should I book packing?+
Book the packing when you book the removal: ideally 2 to 4 weeks before your move date. Packing usually happens 1 day before the removal. For larger properties (4+ bedrooms), packing may start 2 days before. End-of-month dates and August fill up fastest. Call us on 0207 118 7778 to check availability.
