We have put together a comprehensive moving house checklist to help you better prepare for your moving day.
There are many institutions to inform about the change of your address and other seemingly small but important steps that you need to take to accomplish this task properly. In this article we solely focus on the moving house checklist.
Four to three weeks ahead of your house move:
- Get a removal quotation – the sooner the better. In busy seasons like summer or December before Christmas many moving companies are booked well ahead.
- Speak to your employer about time off from work. Consider if you need more days to pack your household for the move, or whether you choose to elect your moving company to provide the packing service for you. Movers are faster and, in most cases can pack everything in one day.
- Order necessary packing materials well ahead of your move. You may need to pack a little every day to fit this task into your busy life schedule.
- Plan alignment of the furniture in your new property.
- Declutter and throw away what you do not need.
Two weeks ahead of your house move:
- Book a parking space for the removal vans. Local authorities in some boroughs require more than a week’s notice to process the application.
- Inform utility companies that you are moving.
- Inform your TV signal supplier.
- Begin packing non-essentials, should you not have started this process yet. Start with rooms that you do not use frequently, or in your garden. Also, make sure to label all the boxes rather with names of rooms in your new property. It will be easier to allocate them during offloading.
- Run down your freezer a bit.
One week before your house move:
- Inform your bank and doctor.
- Tell your council and ask for a final statement on your council tax.
- Inform your car and house insurance brokers.
- Decide who is going to look after your children and pets during the moving day.
- Send out “change of address" cards to your friends and family.
- Make a good progress on packing of your household.
- Run down the freezer significantly.
Two to one day ahead of you house move:
- Defrost the freezer. It should not leak during the transit.
- Prepare a box of “moving day essentials” - things like paperwork for the housing agency, important keys, mobile phone chargers, laptop, clothes, and shoes that you need to wear during the move etc.
- Set aside thing you will be transporting.
- Disconnect the washing machine and the dishwasher.
- Label items and keys that need to be left for the new owner.
Your house moving day:
- Strip the beds and finish packing of the very last items.
- Set aside the vacuum cleaner.
After the move:
- Take immediately the meter reading and contact the utility companies.
- Pay stamp duty land tax.
- And finally make sure to say hello to your new neighbour
